Do you ever feel like you are invisible? Most of us feel that way sometimes, but there is something far worse than feeling invisible… You could be visibly invisible.
We are all living in digital world where information about everything and everyone is available to anyone in an instant. A quick Google search can provide access to a wealth of information on any topic including information about you.
Do you know what shows up when someone does a search on your name? Are the search results positive, negative, or even worse, are you visibly invisible?
A former student of mine recently applied for what she thought was the perfect job. It was the great opportunity with a company she wanted to work for, and she was as qualified for the position as any other candidate. She sent in her job application along with her resume, and she waited for the call requesting an interview sildenafil citrate 100mg. Unfortunately, this was a call that never came.
She wondered how it was possible that she was overlooked. Not even considered. She could not let it go, so she made it her mission to find out why she was not thought of as a good candidate. She spoke to some recruiters and HR people to get their thoughts about what was wrong with her resume, her cover letter or her qualifications. And then she shared her findings with me.
The bottom line was that in the digital world, she was non-existent. Not a single listing in Google had any information about her. Good, bad or indifferent. She was visibly invisible, and for some recruiters and potential employers, that alone was reason enough for her to be passed over. After all, there are plenty of other qualified and highly visible candidates painting a much clearer picture of themselves.
Recruiters and potential employers do look at Google for information about candidates. Don’t think they are just looking for negative information to help them remove some candidates from their pile of resumes. It is far more likely that they are looking for something that is going to make you stand out from your competition. They want to see Google search results that make them stop and take notice of someone special. So don’t relax and think all is good because you cannot find any negative information about you showing up in Google .
The reality is that no Google results at all are almost as bad as negative results. When you are competing with an untold number of qualified candidates, you absolutely must have something to make yourself stand out. And a LinkedIn profile by itself is not going to make you stand out. Everyone that does what you do has a LinkedIn profile showing that they do what you do. They all have have skills and qualifications just like you, and maybe even more experience than you. But, you can be special. You can market yourself better than the competition. You can show more about who you are, and the value of what you can bring to the table.
Build your digital brand and let people see you the way you want to be seen. Be known for what you want to be known for. Don’t be afraid to be visible and show yourself off. After all, the alternative is being visibly invisible.
